Andrea Jackson<\/a> works with apprenticeship providers to attract the best Ofsted inspection grade possible by helping providers understand how learners, employers, and staff are feeling about the quality of the apprenticeship training provision, then identifying processes and procedures that will improve the impact of that training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 4th episode of The Apprenticeships Podcast<\/a>, Andrea talks about the challenges that the pandemic has brought to the apprenticeship world; how COVID has changed the way that apprenticeship programs are run; the importance of apprenticeships; and the benefits of taking on an apprentice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empathy and listening to learners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Empathy plays a key role when teaching, and Ofsted readiness should not be the only focus. Andrea also discusses the SAR (self-assessment report), and how it is more for the training provider than Ofsted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best way to find out how a learner is feeling is to speak to them, listen, and not interrupt. Andrea discusses the importance of leaving one’s ego behind when working with apprentices, in order to better understand and help them. She also talks about the challenges that apprenticeship providers have been facing in recent years, including the need to adapt to new technologies and the increased pressure to hit targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employer involvement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is vitally important for the employer to be part of the apprenticeship team and committed to the program, as well as engaging with regular communication and catch-ups between the mentor, apprentice, and employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a need for everyone to be on the same page in order to ensure a successful outcome for the apprentice and employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initial assessments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Initial assessments play an important role in helping to create an individualised learning plan for each learner. Getting to know the learner personally and their individual needs is essential in the process of creating an effective plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initial assessments are not just a “tick box exercise” but are an opportunity to assess the learner’s goals and aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
