{"id":148,"date":"2022-05-30T19:46:15","date_gmt":"2022-05-30T19:46:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/?p=148"},"modified":"2022-05-31T10:12:31","modified_gmt":"2022-05-31T10:12:31","slug":"reflective-writing-empowers-apprentices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/reflective-writing-empowers-apprentices\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflective writing empowers apprentices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is reflective writing and how can it empower learners?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, a <a href=\"https:\/\/mysnapshot.ck.page\/posts\/meta-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meta Learning<\/a> reader asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em><strong>What is reflective writing?<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It came out of our conversation as to why we included this section in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mysnapshot.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MySnapshot<\/a> self-assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as inviting learners to score themselves, we invite them to share their reflections on why they gave that score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This feedback from a learner is one that makes us smile widely each time we hear it. It highlights how knowing what to focus on makes a huge difference &#8211; in this case to this man&#8217;s career:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>It has really made me reflect on what I find challenging and consider what I need to work on to help me land well in my new role.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encouraging self-reflection and creating a safe space for it in your online course, community, mastermind, coaching or consulting practice will enable your learners to navigate their learning and progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"891\" height=\"859\" src=\"https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/in_thought_re_qyxl.png\" alt=\"Reflective learning\" class=\"wp-image-163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/in_thought_re_qyxl.png 891w, https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/in_thought_re_qyxl-300x289.png 300w, https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/in_thought_re_qyxl-768x740.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 891px) 100vw, 891px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, what is reflective writing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflective writing is the process of putting into writing your reflective thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although reflective thinking is a key part of the process &#8211;&nbsp;<strong>reflective writing takes reflective thinking to a different level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By writing down your thoughts you articulate them outside of your own mind, onto physical or digital paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflective writing becomes a forcing function for greater clarity in your reflection process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So,&nbsp;<strong>what is the reflection process?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we first start to reflect and write down our thoughts,&nbsp;<strong>we often think that it\u2019s about<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Looking back at an event.<\/li><li>Thinking about what we\u2019ve learned from the experience.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What we don\u2019t realise is that it is equally about<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Thinking about how the lessons we\u2019ve learned can be applied.<\/li><li>Looking ahead.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reflective writing is a 3 stage process<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/reflective-process-1024x522.jpg\" alt=\"Reflective Process\" class=\"wp-image-177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/reflective-process-1024x522.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/reflective-process-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/reflective-process-768x392.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/reflective-process-1536x784.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/reflective-process-2048x1045.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Look back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What happened? Why did you do it that way?<\/li><li>What did you learn?<\/li><li>How does it make you feel? Do you feel confident about it?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Assess<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What is your progress? Were you effective?<\/li><li>What can you celebrate?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Look ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Are there adjustments in your approach you want to make?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If we imagine an experience as a wet cloth, the purpose of reflection<\/strong>&nbsp;is to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wring every last drop of learning out of that experience.<\/li><li>Figure out how you can put your learning into action.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Nobody is saying this is easy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may feel like you\u2019re really struggling uphill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, when it becomes a regular activity, it can feel normal and relatively easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"967\" height=\"694\" src=\"https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Random_thoughts_re_cob6.png\" alt=\"Reflection helps apprentices own their learning\" class=\"wp-image-165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Random_thoughts_re_cob6.png 967w, https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Random_thoughts_re_cob6-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/tresl.education\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Random_thoughts_re_cob6-768x551.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 967px) 100vw, 967px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine you give a presentation you\u2019ve spent a lot of time preparing for and you\u2019re really happy with the way you delivered it and how it was received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, someone at the end asks you an awkward question you hadn&#8217;t prepared for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might feel a bit flustered and not answer it how you would have liked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you reflect on this, you may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Write about how you did not like that feeling.<\/li><li>Realise that despite being unprepared, you did manage to give an answer of sorts.<\/li><li>Realise you can think on your feet and have the confidence to do the same in other situations.<\/li><li>Think more about possible questions and responses for future presentations.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When you realise that you can analyse things and work out possible ways forward for yourself &#8211; your self-confidence gets a boost.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you invite self-reflection in your learning experience, even if you come across some resistance from those new to it, or those who don&#8217;t create the space for it &#8211; whether your learners choose to take you up on your invitation or not, you are inviting the space for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Those who do take up your invitation will be grateful for the opportunity to discover their learning within themselves and the rewarding\u00a0and\u00a0empowering\u00a0experience reflection brings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is reflective writing and how can it empower learners?
